Pinocchio’s Test

PInocchio as a metaphor for artisan craftmanship

What is the Pinocchio test?

There is a useful fable for artisan craftmanship in Disney’s Pinocchio.

Geppetto creates a puppet, a work with which he is so enamoured and which is so fulfilling that he makes a most passionate, heartfelt plea; that this puppet would come to life.

This concept of the artisan’s work as being work for its own sake, that has its own life is a common one. It is part of the Get Artisan™ notion of autonomy, for example.

The artisan blogger, writer, business entrepreneur longs to see their endeavour gain momentum and take on its own life. Geppetto wishes the very same thing, in more literal terms.

And in the Disney version, something magical happens, something that we might play with as if it were a torch throwing light and shadow on our own artisan aspirations; the Blue Fairy comes along and grants Geppetto his wish.

Geppetto’s puppet is brought to life.

Of sorts.

He must pass a test though for this craftsman’s work to be made truly real and that test is a test for you and I, if we choose to take it.

Pinocchio’s test is that he must show himself to be brave, truthful and unselfish.

How does that look for you and your work?

Brave.

Truthful.

Unselfish.

Go on. Take the test. Get artisan.
